Connection and Present Parenting Interview Series

Connection and Present Parenting Blog Series Episode Eight

The intention behind this blog series is to shine a light on different family structures, ways in which both mums & dads, single mums, single dads, homosexual couples all connect with their little ones.

It is about how we do so with simplicity, elaborately or maybe how we don’t do it much at all and how we can work on it. I wanted to also shine a light on how we can also do the same with each other as a couple as well as ourselves as individuals.

Episode Eight:

Introducing beautiful, ocean loving mama of two Gemma.  She’s discovered a love for photography and has newly become a Wifey to her long time love.

Name and Age- Gemma 29

Children/Child/Infants name and age- Scout is 3 and Vega 1

Relationship status- Married

What do you do?

At the moment, looking after the kids full time and the occasional photo shoot on the side.

How has becoming a parent changed you?

I think the biggest change I’ve noticed is how much more I care about other people’s feelings rather than just my own. Before I do anything, I think about how it would affect other people- especially with the kids.

What do you do to connect with your little ones?

Every day we go to the beach- that’s definitely where they are the most happiest. We lay in bed every night and talk about our day- what made us happy, what made us sad and all our little adventures. It’s the best way to wind down and really appreciate what we all did that day. That sounds really corny, but it is a really nice way to end the day haha

How do you create present parenting within your home?

Music is a big part of our lives and Scout is constantly performing for us. Giving him our 100% attention in these little moments and really listening to him and showing appreciation, I think, is so important. We definitely let him decide what we do each day and it’s always a lot of fun.

Do you connect with your partner regularly ie. Date night or day? At home or out?

We don’t get too many date nights or days at the moment. I’m sure maybe when the kids are a little older we will- but for now, days and nights are spent with the 4 of us the majority of the time. But, I wouldn’t change it, and I don’t think he would either. In saying that, we are having a little date day/night on Saturday and we are both really excited! 🙂

Do you connect with yourself regularly ie. Self care rituals?

Vega has been a big breast feeder her whole life so I haven’t had too much of an opportunity too. My husband is super helpful though and always takes the kids so I get a bit of time to myself. I’ve found Pilates to be my little self care ritual since Vega has been born, but admittedly, I’ve been a little slack with that since the wedding.

Any words of wisdom for those that are new to being a parent, ways in which they can connect with their little ones? Ways in which they can find time for themselves and each other?

I remember after Scout was born- I had such a tough time adjusting to motherhood. I kept thinking to myself “why doesn’t anyone talk about how hard this is?” Everyone kept saying it was so magical and honestly, I was sitting there thinking “Have I ruined my life?” I just kept doing the things I was “supposed” to do- breastfeeding, baby wearing, kissing, cuddling and telling everyone how great he was- slowly, each month felt a little bit better and now I can’t imagine ever feeling those feelings- sooo I guess my words of wisdom are talk to people and tell them how you’re feeling – the good and the bad! And if you need help, ask for it! It’s so important and when you’re happy, your family is happy!

Also, find a hobby! A little outlet from “mum life” for me, photography has been such a huge part of my life since I’ve had the kids. It’s made me feel like more than just a mum some days and is a great creative outlet.
